We have made some progress with the wedding planning and we have found the place where we will marry and set a date! It is a beautiful space with wide plank floors, exposed brick, high ceilings and skylight windows. We both loved it as soon as we saw it. The only less then pleasing part is that it is on Hooker St. Not so thrilled to have that printed on the wedding invitation, but what can you do.
So we now have a sort of biggish thing accomplished. Next up, wedding dress shopping. It does not escape me that we will not marry for another 15 months and that it may be a tad early to go shopping. But my mom is coming to town for the weekend and I thought it would be nice to go look at some dresses with her, and have some good old-fashioned mother-daughter-future-mother-in-law bonding (B's mom is coming along as well). I can only hope that some wine is readily available, in case things get hairy.

happy birthday to you!
Well due to my lack of blogging, I have not announced that a very important day just passed. The week before last was B's birthday and he is thankfully another year older and we took time out of our busy schedules to celebrate. I will break it down like this: 24 funfetti cupcakes, 3 birthday dinners, one shot of birthday whiskey, one bottle of birthday rye, two birthday tickets to go see Spoon, zero spankings and one bike that the birthday boy bought himself.
The birthday boy has taken up a new hobby of biking with an obsessive compulsivity that I have never seen before. I have always viewed hobbies as something that you try out first, see if you like it, and then if it takes maybe make a small purchase or two. Not B, he has taken to biking like none other which is ironic seeing as I owned a bike last year, and sold it because he never expressed any interest in getting a bike so we could bike together. One year later, he has now bought himself a very handsome bike, and just about every bike accessory out there. This is not to say that I am not extremely proud of him, because it is good cardiovascular activity, saves money (sort of) and is environmental sound. My favorite thing that he has said about it is "it is so different then being on my scooter." Chalk up one more thing that I love about you. Happy birthday!

when we have fun
We had a action packed weekend. We threw ourselves a par-tee to celebrate our engagement with some of our good friends. The adventure began on Friday evening after work. We began at Crate & Barrel where we were buying a friend's birthday present and somehow ended up starting a registry. Which ended up being completely useless because after receiving our magical gun, the salesperson politely asked "When are you getting married," to which we answered "June...2011," this was met with a brief explanation that because most of the merchandise was seasonal, he wouldn't recommend registering for anything other then small appliances. Six small appliance later, we surrendered the gun and admitted our defeat.
Next up were Binny's and Trader Joes, where we purchased a cartload of liquor and beer and then a cartload of frozen appetizers. We felt victorious by nights end because not only had we bought everything for the party but now we wouldn't have to brave North and Clybourn on a Saturday afternoon.
The next day we cleaned and attempted to remove every last cat hair due to our friends husband's allergies. Our thanks to my dad and stepmom's generous donation of a Dyson vacuum. It is truly a magnificent piece of machinery, that makes vacuuming a fascinating but disturbing science experiment.
Later on that evening. People showed up bearing bottles of wine and lovely cards. Drinks were made, Old Fashions were the biggest hit of the evening. There were introductions, some moderate to heavy drinking, conversations and some alleged dancing. It was truly a lovely party. And a nice reminder that our wedding is going to be very similar but I get to wear a white dress and then we get to spend an evening with those that we love the most, I can't wait.
The next morning was fairly painless barring the glaring sunlight that poured into our room. But a sleep mask and few hours of sleep later, we surveyed the kitchen, turned on the Roomba (yet another amazing piece of machinery), grabbed the paper and headed out to brunch. B's friends met us up as we enjoyed a delicious breakfast and bloody mary together.
I forgot to mention that this particular Sunday was honestly, one of the best days that I have had in recent memory. Aimee came to town for the party and Ryan had to study all day, so we had agreed that she could spend the day with us. And that she did. After some post-brunch lounging she burst in and announced that she had already puked that morning and was now ready to do nothing. And that we did, for the next ten hours. It was surreal how truly wonderful it was to spend the day with some of my favorite people and watch t.v., play games, eat some delicious appetizers (that I forgot to make the night before) and end the night watching the Oscars. It was brilliant, Aimee was a huge hit. I thank her for coming down and thank Doug and Nathan for being wonderful friends. I like when we have fun.

fancy pants
Last week was Restaurant Week here in Chicago, it takes place every year when all the fanciest restaurants in town offer a $32 tasting menu. It is a pretty amazing concept and it is one of those things that I read about each year but never take advantage of. As luck would have it, timing worked out perfectly and I booked us a reservation at Japonais at 5:30 pm for Sunday. We felt like we were going to an early bird special, but in ironed clothes. The food was good but not great, the cocktails on the other hand were delicious but ridiculously over-priced.
After that, we went and had a few more drinks at the bar next door before heading over to the new fancy movie theater, Icon. For those of you who haven't heard of this, there are now movie theaters with cocktails, gourmet food and comfortable armchairs to sit in. I must admit that I was dubious of it, seeing as I balk at matinee prices, but it was pretty luxurious and a nice addition to our date night.
In other news, Ethan just got his school portraits done. And after getting them back, I couldn't help but to think that he really looks like a boy now. He is talking so much now and is able to put together complete sentences with some interesting observations, his new favorite thing is finding words that rhyme. We can have now have conversations, albeit short ones, but the leaps and bounds in his language skills over the past six months have been pretty astounding.
The other day B and I were discussing whether or not we would have a baby together. I think B's knee jerk reaction is to say no, we already have our hands full with Ethan, which is very true. And part of me would be completely ok with just one, but there is another part of me that thinks that it would wonderful to go through the experience of having a baby together. Time will tell, there are many pros and cons to think about and there is also a wedding to plan.
Speaking of, planning is going fairly well. We looked at two more places this past weekend, and thought that both of them were the best ones that we have seen so far. We are leaning more towards one then the other, so hopefully we will have made a decision and have set a date very soon. We also have someone to marry us! Our good friend Nathan spent some time this past weekend on the interwebs and is now officially able to preside over us. Pretty awesome. Things are shaping up nicely.
