off and running

The new year is off to a good start. Although the state of Massachusetts might have ruined it today...and I suppose the good people of Haiti might also disagree. But in my small little world, things are going a-ok.

We had an exhausting weekend. We saw lots of friends, cooked some really delicious food, had a few cocktails and played way too much Settlers of Catan. Three nights in a row with three different sets of friends. And sadly, I only won once. We also went to an engagement party, went bowling, saw Sherlock Holmes (highly entertaining), and B got a fancy new haircut.

As of late we have been obsessively watching True Blood. It's our new Mad Men. But season 2 is coming to a quick end, so we have been told to watch the Wire. I find that it's kind of lame to watch these shows after everyone else has, because no one can really remember what happen or they don't want to talk about if for fear that they will ruin it because they can't really remember what happen. It's a lose lose situation. We need to find new friends that are a few seasons behind watching most tv shows that we heard were good. Maybe I will start a Meetup Group for People who Caught on to a Show a Few Seasons behind, but probably not. Due to the daunting task of trying to catch up on Lost before it starts the final season, but I still have 11 episodes to go and I am going to be honest, it's not looking good.

In other less then exciting news, I am now in two book clubs. And I find that reading on deadline seems to disagree with me. I inevitably find myself procrastinating. But yet, I find myself suggesting to start book clubs left and right with enthusiasm. I think something is misfiring in my brain. And on that note, I leave you.

resolutions

Over the holiday, B's mom had told us about someone she knew that resolved to not purchase anything new except for food for a year. Not surprisingly, she ended up saving thousands of dollars. This got me to thinking if we could do the same thing. And the answer that we came to was probably not, but let's try it out for a month. So we are 10 days into the new year, so far so good, except for a sled purchase that was deemed necessary for some winter fun yesterday.

I think that giving up stuff for a month is going to hopefully be a bit of a reset button for us. Not unlike a fast or a cleanse, it is not sustainable long term for us to not buy anything ever again. But it would do us some good to be thankful for all the stuff that we have and hopefully save some money this year.

My thoughts for this year are to make micro-resolutions which will hopefully result in small shifts in my life that will make things more fulfilling and happier.

1. Do yoga once a week: something that I enjoy doing so much, but only do sporadically
2. Cook more: my quest to become a better cook in 2009 has yielded fairly good results. I am getting a hang of things but still rely heavily on recipes. Luckily, we got a combined four new cookbooks for Christmas so the quest continues.
3. Finish my website: it was started, the design was almost complete and then my laptop got stolen and nothing was backed up. So I started anew and am tinkering away at it.
4. Catch up: There are a few people that I make a concerted effort to talk to frequently, but there are a few people that I should make more of an effort to talk to more.
5. Gratitude: It was suggested to me that perhaps before every dinner, we should all hold hands (which Ethan really enjoys doing) and instead of saying grace we should all say something that we are grateful for. To teach Ethan the meaning of gratitude and for us to be reminded of it as well.
6. Patience: You can never have to much. And like any parent, I sometimes run short on it.

That's about it. A fairly unexciting set of resolutions. That said, I do think that 2010 is going to be a fantastic year. Both B and I got job offers for permanent full time employment which I am excited and relieved about. There was a minor blip of excitement that we might be moving to Colorado after B interviewed for a job in Boulder, but their lack of alacrity with a job offer has made us re-think this and have decided that two of us being employed here is better then one of us possibly being employed there. That is not to say that we have given up on the idea of moving west, it is still there, but the timing of this seemed off and a little bit too much too soon. We have finally reached a point of things being settled and really good, no need to rock the boat just yet.

2009 in Review

In 2009 I really enjoyed: Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri, brunch at Lula Cafe, Settler's of Catan, Mad Men, and seeing the Weakerthans at Bottom Lounge.

Saw these movies and loved them:
• Where the Wild Things Are
• Away We Go
• I Love You, Man
• Avatar

Couldn't stop listening to:
• Andrew Bird: Noble Beast
• The Dodos: Time to Die
• The Rural Alberta Advantage: Hometowns
• The XX: xx
• Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion

The Highlight Reel:
• Job offer. Unemployment drought ends. And to top it off, I love my new job.
• Took birthday trips and got to hang out in the mountains.
• Road trip to Minneapolis to see my people.
• My nephew Thoren joins the world.
• B quits shit job and gets a super fantastic one.
• There were some sunny days spent on patios and in parks.
• B took up running with me and I go and lift heavy objects with him.
• Went to the chapel and watched friends love another.
• Ethan goes to Kiddieland before it closed.
• Labor day trip with the fam-damily.
• Andi and Marc welcome a red-headed stepchild.
• Ate some delicious foods and drank responsibly.

There was also apple-picking, Easter-egg hunting, fireworks watching, slip and sliding, carousel-riding, walrus-riding in the pool, farm animal petting, pumpkin patches, trick or treating, cookie-baking, Christmas tree trimming...all the times spent with my two favorite men, who I love so much and don't know what I would do without.
